Scotland is an outdoor paradise.

It has unprecedented access to the wilderness, which allows even bumbling foreigners to enjoy the spoils of nature. Toss in spectacularly friendly locals and some pretty impressive history and it’s hard to believe that tourists aren’t already swamping its every munro and moorland.

We hiked the rugged beauty and tiresome bog of the Cape Wrath Trail, but there are tons of routes and outings to choose from. Plus, with free and open access to wild camping, it can be explored on any budget. Don’t have a tent? Then bothies, the equally free and open wilderness huts, might be for you. Go ahead. Pinch yourself.

The two biggest drawbacks: midges and rainclouds. Do not underestimate them.
